Your Child's First Dental Visit: What to Expect

The Australian Dental Association recommends that children see a dentist by the time their first tooth erupts β€” or by their first birthday, whichever comes first. Early dental visits are not just about checking teeth; they are about establishing a positive relationship with dental care that will benefit your child for life.

When to Book the First Appointment

Most parents are surprised to learn that children should have their first dental check before age one. At this stage, the appointment is gentle and brief β€” the dentist will check the emerging teeth, assess the gums and jaw development, and provide guidance to parents on diet, dummy use, tooth cleaning technique and fluoride.

How to Prepare Your Child

  • Talk positively about the dentist in the lead-up to the appointment
  • Read children's books or watch videos about visiting the dentist
  • Avoid using words like 'hurt', 'needle' or 'drill' β€” keep language neutral and upbeat
  • Role-play the appointment at home β€” take turns being the dentist
  • Book a morning appointment when children are typically fresher and more cooperative
  • Bring a comfort item such as a favourite toy or blanket

What Happens at the Appointment

At Experteeth, our paediatric-focused dentists are experienced in making children feel at ease. The first visit typically includes a gentle examination of the teeth and gums, a discussion of brushing and flossing technique, dietary advice, and fluoride treatment if appropriate. We always allow the child to see and touch the instruments before they are used and we work at the child's pace.

The CDBS: Free Dental Care for Eligible Children

Australian children aged two to seventeen who hold an eligible Medicare card may be entitled to up to $1,095 in bulk-billed dental services over a two-year period under the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS). Ask our reception team to check your child's eligibility at your next visit.
